How does the SchoolFusion calendar synchronize to Outlook?

SchoolFusion offers two methods of syncing a calendar with Outlook.

Method # 1: Sync. When viewing any SchoolFusion calendar in Internet Explorer, there is a "Synchronize Calendar" link on the top right.  Using this link, an Active-X plug-in will be installed, and events from the calendar are pushed to an Outlook calendar.  Once the plug-in is installed, synchronizing only requires a few clicks.

Please take these steps to use the “sync” feature:

  1. Click the “Synchronize Calendar” Link
  2. The first time you sync, you will be asked to install the “Wyncs ActiveX Control Module”
  3. Click the link to install the module.
  4. Click the “Synchronize Now” link
  5. Select the appropriate appointments
  6. Click “Synchronize”
  7. The events have been added to your Outlook calendar.

This includes any current information on the selected calendar view and event updates (including deletes).

Please Note: Events that appear on your Outlook calendar cannot be pushed into a SchoolFusion calendar using the Sync feature. The Sync option is not a real time update of events, in order for the Outlook calendar to reflect the most current events; the sync will need to be re-done.

Please note: The Sync feature is only available in Internet Explorer. If you are using Windows Vista, or IE8, additional steps are necessary

For Internet Explorer 8:

  1. Close all Internet Explorer Windows
  2. From the Start Menu, RIGHT Click on Internet Explorer
  3. Select “Run as Administrator”, this will open a new IE window
  4. From the “Tools” Menu, select “Internet Options”
  5. On the “Advanced Tab”, in the “Security” Section, UNCHECK the Enable Memory protection to help mitigate online attacks” setting.
  6. Click “Ok”
  7. Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect

For Windows Vista

  1. Open an Internet Explorer window
  2. From the “Tools” menu, select “Internet Options”
  3. Click the Security Tab
  4. Click “Trusted Sites”
  5. Enter the URLs of any sites where you will be syncing a calendar
  6. Click “OK”
  7. Restart Internet Explorer

Method # 2: iCal feed. The second method of syncing is via iCalendar feeds.

This is the de-facto method of synchronizing calendars across the Internet, and is available to all browsers.  Importing an iCalendar (.ics) file into Outlook requires a multi-step process of downloading & saving the .ics file, and then importing it into Outlook. This process will need to be repeated whenever events are added or updated within the SchoolFusion Calendar.

Please take these steps to add an iCal feed into an Outlook Calendar:

  1. From SchoolFusion click on the iCal link found on any calendar
  2. Click to download the Outlook add-in
  3. Download and install the program.
  4. Download the ICAL file, example: name.ics
  5. Go to your Outlook calendar.
  6. Click on File>Import and Export
  7. Highlight Import an iCalendar or vCalendar file (.vcs) select next.
  8. Locate the name.ics file on and press OK.
