How do I shrink a picture taken by my digital camera, so that it becomes easier for my users to download?
Most pictures taken by digital cameras are extremely high quality, and thus have a very large file size. This becomes a hindrance to your users when they have to download a 2 Megabyte picture on your web page. It is good practice to keep pictures on your web page to a couple hundred KB at the very most. Even at 50 KB, the image quality is quite good.
If you need to resize a picture, you should be able to use any picture editor that comes with your digital camera.
For PC users, we also suggest using MS Paint, which is a standard accessory that comes with Windows. To resize pictures using Paint, please use the following steps: 1. Open Microsoft Paint (Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint) 2. Open your photo 3. Click Image > Stretch and Skew
4. In the Stretch boxes, change to the same percent for both the horizontal and vertical proportions – be sure to use the same for both. The example shows the picture is being resized to 30% of its original size 5. Leave the Skew proportions set to Zero 6. Click OK
7. Save your image with a new filename. Use JPG format for photos and GIF format for graphics.
